Book Review: You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

Something I’ve been wanting to do as a series on my blog is to start doing book reviews. I love reading and being a writer is something I’ve been passionate about for a long time now. So today I am going to do my very first book review here on my blog, and I know there are many more to come. Enjoy!

Review

This was the first self-help book I had ever picked up. In fact, I don’t think I had ever even heard of a self-help book until I saw this. I knew about them of course, but I was definitely one of those people that thought those were for sappy sad people that couldn’t get it together. I mean “self-help” just sounds bad, doesn’t it? But that’s exactly what I was needing… help from myself!

I was struggling with my job, I couldn’t figure out what I was doing with school, and I just felt like I had no direction. None. Nadda. It was just gone. I read this book in December of 2017 around the time when I feel like I was really seeing a lot of hype surrounding the book, so I picked it up and was absolutely GLUED to that thing.

I would take this book with me EVERYWHERE! I was constantly looking for moments when I could pop it open at work or at home or even in my car! …Don’t worry I wasn’t driving and reading. Just parking and reading! This is one of those books that just speaks directly to you and makes you feel like you’re getting the best kick-in-the-ass pep talk of your life. I love Jen’s writing style in this. She’s so down-to-earth and relatable which makes you feel like she really gets what it’s like to feel lost and come out of that funk.

The book is broken down into 5 major parts and leads you from finding out how you got in a funk all the way to becoming so confident you feel like you could be on the next Forbes billionaire list. While I was reading this book, I could tell my mindset was changing and becoming more positive. I was creating better habits, eating better food, exercising, and really trying to make a difference in my life. With all of that added together, I think you as the reader get a clear mind and a clear sense of who you want to be and what you want to do in life.

Audience

This book is great for a 13+ audience and anyone feeling like they need some motivation in their lives! This book opened the door of the self-help genre for me and it’s now one of my favorite genres to read. I recommend this to everyone!

Final Thoughts

I feel like this is a book you could read a million times over in your lifetime, and not necessarily just when you feel like you’re stuck or in a rut. I feel like you can reread this to re-spark your motivation, get a fresh new perspective, and set new goals for yourself. This is an incredibly inspiring book so much so that I went out shortly after finishing this book and purchased her other book “You Are a Badass at Making Money” (which is another great read). I am about to pick this book up for the second time now and read through it again which is why I wanted this to be my first book review on my blog. I can’t put it down and I know you won’t be able to either!
